North Florida Soaring Society
~Soaring the Skies of North Florida~

NFSS Mission

The mission of North Florida Soaring Society (NFSS) is to promote the sport of soaring both locally and nationally through the provision of safe flying, facilities, equipment, education and training for its members on a not-for-profit basis.

NFSS Location

NFSS is located approximately 8 miles southwest of downtown Jacksonville, Florida. We offer year-round soaring every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Herlong Airport (HEG), located 2 miles west of I-295 on Normandy Blvd

NFSS Sailplanes

NFSS currently offers the following five sailplanes and one towplane for use by our members: Two Blanik L-13s, One Blanik L-23, One SGS 1-36, One Pilatus B-4, and one Piper PA-25 Pawnee.
Thermal Activity

The Jacksonville, FL area has excellent thermal activity (rising columns of air, usually under cumulus clouds) for soaring. It is not uncommon for club members to reach 8,000+ feet altitude.
Reasonable Rates

NFSS has very reasonable rates and fees which are considered some of the lowest in the country.
Seeking New Members

Membership in North Florida Soaring Society is open to anyone with the desire to learn and enjoy the art and technique of soaring. Sponsorship is the typical way that an application is processed, although NFSS frequently accepts open applications from pilots and non-pilots.
